The Kestrel Trust is a regional land trust working to protect forests, farms, fields and wetlands in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. By collaborating with local citizens, landowners, other land trusts and government agencies, The Kestrel Trust aims to sustain our healthy, productive and historic landscape through direct land protection, partnership and coalition formation, and public education.
Since 1970, Kestrel has helped to protect several thousand acres in the nine-town region including Amherst, Belchertown, Granby, Hadley, Leverett, Pelham, South Hadley, Shutesbury and Sunderland.
Kestrel's focus areas include natural areas that have statewide, regional and even national significance. The Mount Holyoke Range is the stunning scenic monument that defines the Connecticut River Valley with its rare east/west ridgeline. The Quabbin Reservoir is the largest contiguous protected natural area in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, providing clean drinking water for the entire Boston Metropolitan area as well as habitat for a range of wildlife in north central Massachusetts. The Connecticut River, which runs through our backyard, is one of the most important natural and cultural resources in the Northeast. And, not the least of our assets, our valley's farmland is among the richest and most productive in the world.
